AIDS house wins first private grant

A $75,000 grant has heralded the startup of a Belmont home for persons with AIDS.

The House of Mercy, a six-bed care center, is expected to be opened in February by the Sisters of Mercy, an order of Catholic nuns. The grant, $25,000 per year for three years, will go to operating costs.

The Kathleen Price and Joseph M. Bryan Family Foundation of Greensboro awarded the grant.

The order expects $166,000 per year in operating costs, said Sister Mary Wright, Mercy House director.

The house will provide a place to stay and home health care for people with acquired immune deficiency syndrome "who don't have any alternatives except the hospital or the streets," said Sister Mary

The house will operate on donations and grants. People interested in contributing may contact Sister Mary Wright, RSM, Sacred Heart Convent in Belmont.
